Specimen Report, by Dave Favel.

Greetings fellow anglers, it seems like only the other day that we
bragged about our catches in the previous newsletter. Since then we’ve
had outings at S.O.V., Homestead Lake and Florida Lake and due to
certain factors some of us have had to adopt a somewhat humbler tone
when boasting of our most recent results.

Our mid-winter assault on Slaughter on Vaal met with considerably less
cooperation on the part of the fish than we had hoped for. From the
Friday afternoon Tom, Paul, Stan, Eric and myself opened the attack with
boilies and particles banking one small common on Friday night.

On Saturday morning we were joined by Allan Linton-Walls and girlfriend
to whom we showed all the tricks of boilie fishing before they put their
newly acquired knowledge to the test. Not only did they pass the test
but they kicked our butts soundly by bagging five good carp in a few
hours using hair-rigged Power Baits mealies and hair-rigged BFA fogger
balls.

By Saturday afternoon it became obvious to us boilie-koppe that a change
of tactics was required. Paul and I geared down to fishing as light as
we could and it paid off when Paul banked a cracking mudfish of 2kg. By
sunset I started attracting some interest on the ultra light hair rig
but the bites were by no means assertive even on tiny baits and despite
fishing through the night I could only manage a 1,5kg common, a smaller
common and a grassie.

Early Sunday morning Pat and Tony Wardle arrived and wasted no time in
rubbing our noses even deeper in the dirt as they bagged a good haul of
carp, muddies and grassies in only a few hours topped by a stunning
6,8kg mirror. Their going bait was a sweat, white dough.

The Homestead day session did not produce a single bite and neither did
the weekend session at Florida Lake despite fishing the same swims with
the same tactics as the previous session when we bagged up. Such is
fishing.

We will be doing a weekend session the last weekend in September at
Murray Park on the East Rand and would appreciate a better turnout than
what we have become used to of late. Murray Park contains specimen sized
carp and catfish and as usual our panel of know-alls will be on hand to
show the ins and outs.

While we’re on the subject allow me to share the sentiments of a first
timer as expressed in this letter after joining us for his first boilie
fishing session. “Hi Dave and Stan. Just a quick note to say thanks to
you and your team for an interesting day sharing some of your vast
knowledge with us. I would like to do it again some time. It was a
really good experience, and learning about the different rigs and
set-ups was very interesting. I have had stuff in my tackle box for
years that I had no clue what to do with, and now I’m making rigs….for
my next outing. I have even done some reading, went out and purchased a
bunch of goodies and made my own boilies last night. They turned out
perfect! I will be testing them this weekend. Thanks again. Best regards
Allan Linton-Walls.”

And that, dear anglers, is what it’s all about.
