Hi All

Just a short update from South Sea Safaris as to whats is going on. I
am in the throes of packing for a two month trip to Mocambique, Ilha
do Fogo (Island of Fire) to be exact. More of that later.

On the local front, fishing has come to a standstill and I have
mothballed "Lynx" for the winter. We did out last trip on 30 June and
the water on the outside had cooled down to 13.8deg C. Notwithstanding
this we still caught one yellowfin of around 55kg and dropped one of
about the same size. Even so, compared to the catches of the season,
it was clear to see that the winter water had finally moved in and
the yellowfin were all but gone.

We finished the season with just short of 400 yellowfin tuna with an
average weight of 53.4kg. We released around 60 fish of the same
size. Total number of trips for the season was 72 as opposed to 95
last year. This was due mainly to lousy weather and to those of you
who tried to get out with me but could not because of the wind,
hopefully we can do something next year. Our biggest fish was a
beauty of 97.4 kg caught by Dilon Levita. The magical 100kg fish is
still eluding me, but maybe next year!

Struis is very quiet, as it normally is in winter. Cape Point still
has a bit of yellowtail, but they have been sporadic and generally
the water is a chilly 14deg.

Hence the reason for the Mocamique trip. I am escaping the winter
climes for something a bit more tropical. The Island is 300km south
of Pemba and 27km offshore. Uninhabited, we are taking all equipment
with us and my brief from the developer is to explore the area to
check out its fishing and diving potential. Bum job, but somebody's
gotta do it!! I will be using the e-mail fogo@southseasafaris.co.za
{mailto:fogo@southseasafaris.co.za} whilst I am away. We will be on
the island from 22 July until end September. I will send out updates
from the satellite link and if there is enough bandwidth, I'll put up
a few photos on the website. Till next time, tight lines and happy
hunting for the rifle types out there.
Those of you on googleearth can out Ilha do Fogo at lat 17.05,33S and
long 39.07,30E
