Subject: Vaalrivier besoedeling
Webmasters comment; all it takes is someone who has had a total lobotomy to go to the area of this outlet and they will have no hesitation in ascertaining that there has been a serious spill of noxious substances into the water. The smell and the dead fish lying around will clearly indicate that there is a serious problem. I will not even go into what detrimental affect was had on the aquatic invertebrates. Nor will I go into the implications of the purification of this water for drinking purposes further down the river, or some unfortunate who through circumstances drinks the water straight from the river.
I am amazed that the spraying of a herbicide was even considered. Do I have to believe that the possibility exists that a Provincial or Government official given the task of spraying does not know that there are selective and non-selective herbicides.
Act 36!1947 is very specific as to the labelling of herbicides and it is imperative that all the instructions are read very carefully. Even if the person responsible giving the instructions cannot read there are pictures on a coloured band at the foot of each label called pictograms which clearly indicate that the herbicide is harmful to fish etc etc. The next thing we will be told "is that pollution will prevent HIV/AIDS
