Kingfisher Boats Friday Eclare was fishing out of Ngomeni and returned with 15 sailfish and 5 kingfish. Many sailfish were seen and raised, and then either missed or lost. Hectic fishing, no time for a drink or anything else. Something was happening every minute. Baitfish in the from of mantis prawns and anchovies was plentiful and appeared on the sounder as a solid mass of impenetrable fish. Lovely.
I have not heard a word about the Commercial fleet of longliners and purse seiners: they are keeping ominously quiet. The dinghies fishing behind the trawlers are still getting some good kingfish, also the fishermen who fish at night with a strong light do quite well. The shark nets have caught a few more black marlin, but much smaller fish than the one last week. The Trawlers still operating off Malindi, but Batian reports a large flat decked bargelike ship is servicing the trawlers on the North side of Ngomeni point with diesel and water. On the deck is a 40 ft container which presumably will contain the trawlers catch. When this is full I imagine the whole thing will rush off to Mombasa, off load the catch, load diesel and water and then head back to Ngomeni headland. Very neat indeed; now nobody can see what they are catching. Whales are still being seen on most days when the boats are out.
