The Cape cobra accounts
for most snakebite fatalities in the Cape Province. Stands its
ground and spreads an impressive hood when confronted.
Varies in
colouration from black to brown, orange, yellow or mottled. Does
not spit its venom and is an extremely dangerous cobra with a highly
neurotoxic venom. If the aggressor remains motionless, the snake
will soon drop to the ground and move off, only to snap back into
its defensive pose if it detects movement.
The Snouted Cobra (Egyptian
cobra) is found in Savannah grasslands where it is common in lowveld
and bushveld areas. One of Africa's largest cobras, this snake does
not spit. Like the Rinkhals it may also pretend to be dead if threatened.
Usually yellowish to greyish brown in colour, otherwise distinctly
barred with 7 to 11 yellow brown crossbars on a blue-black background.
