Buffalo River

Location: East London
Accessibility: East London Port
Facilities: All that a major city has to offer

General info:

This under estimated river situated in the heart of East London produces an unbelievable variety and volume of fish, scorned by most flyfishers for a various reasons, it should be a venue that is marked in your diary. The regular inhabitants of this river are Skipjack,Leervis,Shad, Kob, and Ribbonfish.

Access is gained through the harbour to a launch site situated at the NSRI base, fishing is good from the pylons and upstream for a couple of kilometers, while there are no definite hotspots ,the area of double creek and green bank tend to produce the best results, tide does not seem to play a major role , but without doubt early morning and evening are prime time.A boat is recommended as the banks are steep with thick vegetation and not advised for the lone angler due to safety, there is a fair sized bush community who live in the area. The best time of year to fish this river is September through April. Click here to see the Buffalo River in its full glory.

I was fortunate to land this magnificent Leervis in Qora River during the Glenfiddich/Colt Gathering

Well worth a visit , species available,Kob,Leervis,Shad, Skipjack,Kingfish,Grunter, Perch, Mullett, Snapper.

The river produces from the sand bars at the mouth right to the top pools, a boat is a must to get around. Nov to May are the best months, with Feb to May being the prime fishing time. It is a easy launch into the river, but be careful of sandbars and rocky reefs, Ian at the hotel will give you a map to navigate. As a venue an overall rating score of 10/10

Nahoon River

Location: East London
Accessibility: Very accessible - Located in the East London Area
Facilities: All that a major city has to offer

General info:

By far the most flyfished river in the East London Area, this is definately a very productive river, you just have to be at the right place at the right time. Launching a boat on this river is very simple, just head towards Playwaters. A licensed motor is required and the authorities do routine checks. Before launching your boat just take the time and look at the tides as a Sprintide requires a bit more effort. There are alot of mudbanks and reed banks that will allow for comfortable bank fishing. This river has Skipjack, Kob, Kingfish, Mullet, Leervis and the odd Spotted Grunter. Flies to use in this river are: Poppers, Clousers, Tarpon, Deceivers and Seaducers. Places to fish is the drop-off (Situated at Playwaters) when the tide starts pushing. I have had alot of fun at the drop-off with Skipjack before, they come in thick, you just have to time it right. Another good place to try is the Rock ledges opposite Torky Road, Alot of Skipjack have been caught in this area before. The only problem I have with this river is speedboats and rubberducks as there is no speedlimit. The best time to fish this river is in the early morning or late afternoon, I have had equal success during both times. Definately a river worth checking out.

Kwelega River

Location: East Coast 34km from East London
Accessibility: Follow the East Coast Resort road
Facilities: Areena Resort: Shop and Camping facilities

General info:

This river is renowned for producing some awesome Skippies. I normally make a weekend of it when fishing this river. The Areena resort which is situated on the upper Kwelega River is the perfect venue to start your venture. At a small fee you can book into a chalet or simply pitch a tent on the banks of the Kwelega. I normally go for option two as there is nothing better than being at one with nature. A boat is advisable on this river as the banks are very overgrown. Species to be targeted in this river is Skipjack, Leervis, Spotted Grunter and Kob. Flies to use is clousers and tarpon.
The best time to fish this river is on a Neap Tide. This river can really turn on at times, the best that I have done in a day six Skipjack and a Leerie. Not a very big river, so finding fish is not that difficult.
