Recent Vaal River pollution and fish kill
The environmental organisation, Eco-Care Trust, an NGO working in the field of water and eco-systems has set up a task team to explore the recent water pollution and subsequent massive fish kills in the Vaal River.
According to the CEO of Eco-Care, Chamara Pansegrouw, the first step will be to invite all the different role-players and stakeholders in an effort to establish the cause of the massive fish kill and to try and determine what went wrong during the weekend of 14 January and who the responsible parties were.
Being a NGO, we have to look at solutions to prevent similar spillages in the Vaal River catchments area. The idea is to build an environmental prevention model which can be used not only in the Vaal River catchments area, but also in other similar catchments areas.
The Department of Water Affairs, Gauteng Province, as well as the catchments agencies and private and leisure industries in the environment and water field have already indicated their willingness to assist, in this and similar endeavours.
According to Pansegrouw, Eco-Care, as a representative of the people, has a responsibility to act and find solutions.
Eco-Care invites anybody who is willing to join this effort and assist them in this cause to contact any one of the following people.
